New species: Bizarre Amazonian 'penis snake'

A bizarre creature dubbed the "penis snake" was discovered in the Amazon river of Brazil by workers preparing for a dam to be constructed. As it happens the "snake" isn't a snake at all, but is rather a very rare member of the amphibian family. The discovery was made in November 2011, but only has recently been confirmed as a new species.

US offers help in Pakistan avalanche rescue

The US has offered help to Pakistan in searching 135 soldiers and civilians buried under snow following an avalanche in the country's Siachen region.

The avalanche hit an army camp near Skardu district at 6am on Saturday. Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has visited the site to personally supervise the rescue work.
