Five Guyanese and Six Jamaicans are Amoung Crew of 12 Arrested for Smuggling 13,000 Pounds of Marijuana

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The Coast Guard, the Royal Netherlands Navy and U.S. law enforcement partner agencies seized 13,000 pounds of marijuana, a cargo freighter and apprehended 12 smugglers, during an at-sea interdiction May 13, 2015 in the Caribbean Sea.

The drug shipment is estimated to have a wholesale value of more than $13 million dollars, while the six Jamaican, five Guyanese and a Vincentian male crew are to be prosecuted for drug smuggling by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Puerto Rico.

U.S. Coast Guard Assists in Search for Survivors After 17 Dead Migrants Wash Ashore in Haiti

MIAMI — The U.S. Coast Guard is assisting the Haitian Coast Guard in searching for possible Haitian migrants in the water after it’s believed their sail freighter ran aground in Haitian territorial seas Wednesday.

The Coast Guard received notification Thursday evening that 17 deceased bodies washed ashore in Haiti. The Haitian Coast Guard rescued 12 survivors but advised that 19 were still missing.

The Haitian Coast Guard requested U.S. Coast Guard air assets to assist with the search.

Gala attendees also had the opportunity to purchase beautiful hand-made arts and crafts along with Haitian Rum and coffee.  Scattered through the cocktail area guests could view beautiful pictures of Haitian children while listening to the musical stylings of Haitian musician Vilard Anglade.

Five years ago today one of the most devastating natural disasters in recorded history struck the nation of Haiti. The earthquake of January 12, 2010 will never be forgotten.

On that fateful day, we experienced a national trauma. Hundreds of thousands of homes were destroyed. Almost two million people were displaced. And more than 300,000 people perished, their voices silenced, their dreams ended. Parents lost sons and daughters. Husbands and wives were widowed. Children became orphans.
